Spring Gala

Join us for a celebratory Gala performance by The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet.

Most recent performance

There are currently no scheduled performances of Spring Gala. It was last on stage 30 May 2018 as part of the Winter 2017/18 season.

Director of The Royal Opera Oliver Mears and Director of The Royal Ballet Kevin O’Hare present a very special programme for this unique Gala performance, celebrating our opera and ballet heritage in Covent Garden.

Under the baton of world-renowned Music Director Antonio Pappano, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and international opera stars including Liparit Avetisyan, Hrachuhi Bassenz, Bryan Hymel, Gwyn Hughes Jones, Konu Kim (Jette Parker Young Artist), Anita Rachvelishvili and Pretty Yende perform show-stopping highlights from favorites including La Fille du Regiment, Norma, Eugene Onegin, Tosca and Carmen, as well as pieces from Gounod’s rarely heard Sapho and Meyerbeer’s Dinorah.

The Royal Ballet will showcase the glittering talents of the full Company, joined by some very special guest artists for this exclusively commissioned evening. Former Royal Ballet First Artist Leanne Cope and former New York City Ballet principal dancer and Tony Award-nominee Robert Fairchild perform an excerpt from Christopher Wheeldon’s award-winning An American in Paris. There is also the unique opportunity to see Elisa Badenes (Stuttgart Ballet) and Alexander Jones (Zurich Ballet) in Christian Spuck’s brilliant parody of the ballet genre, Le Grand Pas de Deux. Other highlights include Ashton’s Dance of the Blessed Spirits with Vadim Muntagirov, McGregor’s Limen with Sarah Lamb and Ryoichi Hirano, MacMillan’s Winter Dreams with Marianela Nuñez and Thiago Soares, a preview of The Unknown Soldier by Alastair Marriott, which has its world premiere on our stage this autumn and features Francesca Hayward and Matthew Ball, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s unique take on The Nutcracker with Natalia Osipova and guest artist Jason Kittelberger, plus the spectacular finale of Balanchine’s Symphony in C. Emmanuel Plasson conducts the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

All proceeds from the evening will benefit the Royal Opera House Covent Garden Foundation, enabling us to continue presenting extraordinary performances, remarkable craftsmanship and inspiring learning and participation projects.
