    Jonas Kaufmann and Maria Agresta were outstanding as were all the performers - fabulous orchestral playing too - would have been nice to have had some shots of the orchestra and Pappano while performing.

    I've just returned from the screening. It was wonderful. The critic I read must've been asleep. I thought nothing could match seeing the production in the 70s with Domingo et al. But I am pleased to say this did. All congratulations to singers and musicians.

      The critic would have been at the first night, as I was, and it was generally underwhelming, so you can't chastise someone from reporting on another performance.

    Wonderful. I thought JK rose to greatness in Acts 3 and 4 (very good but, perhaps understandably, a little restrained before that). One of the very best Iagos I have ever seen - and I go back to Tito Gobbi . A very good Desdemona again best in Acts 3 and 4.
    Masterfully conducted. Loved the production. A great gain in the cinema (other than the close ups) was seeing what Iago was up to in the Act 3 concertato finale. Coming to see it live on Thursday and can't wait.

    Great singing and acting, wonderful music from the pit. You hear everything from the score. Not fast, but with tension. Kaufmann is in the group of Vinay, Vickers, Domingo, Cura.

    An outstanding performance. Loved the choir pieces and the stage setting.
    I'm so grateful that these operas are being shown in cinemas now to a wider audience.
    I didn't know much about opera until the MET started the film screenings. I am hooked now and learned so much.

    In the introduction we were promised a stage design that would be "a performance in itself". Unfortunately, we could not see this "fabulous" design. There was no light. I have written about this problem many times: when filming, everything becomes about 2 shades darker, and lighting design needs to be adapted when a performance is being filmed. Are lighting designers and screen directors really so arrogant, that they do see the need to consider the special requirements for a cinema or DVD audience (we are paying after all!!!!!)?? Is it really so difficult to get the filming right?

      I agree it was to dark in the cinema we could not see everything was just black and unless the artist were front stage we could not see them. Kaufman and Agresta were absolutely fabulous thank you for Al the cinema relays I have been to all transmissions both Opera and Ballet can't wait for September.

      Thanks for your comments. The lighting is carefully considered for all of our cinema broadcasts by our team of highly experienced directors and camera operators; this production is, of course, particularly dark, but the performances should have still been visible. We will follow up with the cinema to ensure the display was correct.

    Es ist bzw.war eine wunderbare Leistung vom gesamten Team vor allem aber eine ganz hervorragende Qualität des Gesangs, des Schauspiels von Jonas Kaufmann !!!!! Jonas Kaufmann ist unuebertrefflich! Das Orchester mit. Pappano - hervorragend !!!

    Oh, my word.
    That was the one I had been waiting for all season.
    That was the one I had been waiting for for almost two years since it was announced that Mr Kaufmann would be making his Otello debut at Covent Garden.
    The costumes and sets were spectacular and Sir Antonio Pappano proved yet again that he is the ultimate Italian opera conductor - the storm scene was breathtakingly exciting and set the standard for what was to follow. The chorus and supporting characters offered a fabulous foundation from which the principals soared. Ms Agresta was fantastic, but Mr Kaufmann simply took us to another level. Otello's disintegration was complete, utterly believable and heart wrenching. I was in little pieces by the end.
    Mr Kaufmann really is the Otello for our times and I'm not sure I will ever see a performance quite like that again. Absolutely staggering. Thank you Sir Antonio and thank you Mr Kaufmann: I am in awe.
    Thank you ROH Live Cinema. You are fabulous and have made us opera/cinema goers very happy indeed.
    P. S. Has anyone got a ticket going spare for the Sunday matinee? I so badly want to see this live!

    Kept the whole cinema in Cambridge enthralled, and rightly so. Marvellously strong cast and the orchestra magnificent, as always under Pappano. No praise too high for the three principals.

    Very impressed by Iagoplayed byMarco He was malevolently evil and acted the part extremely well!
    Jonas was in excellent form and the gory death scene was rivetting!
    Congratulations to all CHorus,orchestra,Pappano and rest of the cast.

    A wonderful live screening, from the amazing opening chorus to the final death scene , thank you ROH and Jonas ; your voice and performance outstanding . Most powerful Iago; in fact not one weak performance. Antonio & orchestra magnificent. Amazing drama and emotions , I did not want it to end. Must see again

    Southend UK cinema almost full - rare for opera. Audience clapped - forgetting where they were. Tissues prevalent. This is my Otello of a lifetime. Thank you - all of you for a magnificent production that left me unable to drive home for about 10 minutes. Jonas you are incredible.

    Outstanding... AND I had seen it on Saturday @ ROH.... being able to see the characters close up just increased the emotion and involvement. I. All cast were excellent ..of course Jonas just shone..he was made for this role with his acting ability emotion and velvet voice. Have to go again for the encore and am back @ ROH on the 10th... YOU really MUST produce a DVD of would be criminal not to get this into the public domain.

    Amazing singing, Amazing acting, Amazing costumes (hope all the blood comes out!!!!), scenery, conductor, orchestra and chorus. Well done to everyone connected with the production - a magnificent way to end the wonderful season of cinema viewings.
    PS I wouldn't like to meet Iago in the daytime let alone in the dark!!!

    I am so thrilled to be able to witness such wonderful singing from the ROH on the screen. It is great to have such up close views of the expressions as well as being able to hear it so clearly without worrying that the neighbours will ask you to turn it down! I thought that the scenery blended in perfectly and helped to keep the piece flowing so well. It did not distract in any way which is surely the whole point so that you can concentrate on the action etc. Jonas Kaufmann was in top form and so believable as Otello. Iago was an excellent match for Jonas and portrayed his character perfectly. Maria's Desdemona was superb and she made me feel so sad for her in the final scene. All in all it was a superb night out and I must thank the ROH for bringing opera to Weymouth at an affordable price. Thank you all.

    Since it was announced that Jonas had been cast in the title role, I'd been waiting inpatiently. I was not disappointed. His vocal range is wide, almost baritonic in gentler scenes. Still speechless and, almost unbearably, moved by the wonderful performances. Chemistry between the 3 main characters was palpable. Very impressed especially by Keith Warner's direction, Bruno Poet's lighting design, and Michael Barry's movement direction.

    I saw the performance in Dresden. Too many close details on singers instead of showing the interaction between them. This demaged the atmosphere of the story a bit.

    Jonas Kaufmann now ranks as the best Otello altogether i've heard not forgetting the very greatest of my generation Del Monaco,Vickers,Domingo but in Act III and IV in my modest opinion he surpassed and got to the very top. Thanks Jonas for making me cry during the monologue and end of the opera.

    Loved the very dramatic production and the impersonation of evil itself Iago by Marco.
    but of course Jonas was the key .....that sensitive suffering and intoxicating in pain with so much graduation in tone and volume from the very fiery attack fortissimo to the softest whisper and pianissimo.

    Marco Vratogna outstanding throughout as Iago and Jonas Kaufmann came into his own in the second half with some wonderful
    soft singing. Maria Agnesta was a beautiful Desdemona and the Act 4 opening was spellbinding.

    Very disappointed as the cinema I went to were unable to streamed the show. I had been looking forward to watching this for months and the refunding of my tickets did not compensate for missing it.

  31. Six of us went to watch Otello last night in Cáceres, Extremadura, Spain. The cinema was packed. The performance was brilliant, just brilliant. Jonas Kaufmann was wonderful as Otello became progressively more deranged and Maria Agresta was sublime as Desdemona but, for me, Marco Vratogna, who played Iago, was mesmerising in his wickedness. Amazingly Otello is my first opera but it will not be the last. Thank you ROH!

    We saw this at the Taliesin Theatre, Swansea. What a stunning performance and production this was. The whole cast and orchestra were superb. We also appreciated the way the set complemented the psychological aspects of the plot. Pappano has a fantastic sense of the meaning of the music - what a genius.

    Watched Otello at Cottage Road Cinema Leeds. Principals all superb, orchestra played a blinder, wonderful singing from chorus. Darkened sets evoke the underlying menace of Shakespeare's villainous Iago and Otello's increasingly disturbed thinking. Seeing the opera in the cinema brought one right into the action, close up. Magnificent!

    These cinema relays show everything in close-up and any shortcomings are immediately apparent. This production did not have any! The final act was incredibly moving and when the curtain finally came down the audience in my cinema just sat in stunned silence! This was opera at its very finest. Surely this Otello will never be surpassed.

    Truely wonderful production. Do the critics really attend the actual performance.? I was moved to tears several times as the anguish increased. Faultless singing, wonderful acting and a very powerful and imaginative set. The memory of hearing Jonas Kaufman singing this role will stay with me for ever. Thank for giving me the opportunity to share this production relayed to my local cinema. A wonderful unforgettable evening.

    Othello is not the light lyrical opera I would usually be attracted to. However, I was spellbound from beginning to end. The 75 minutes off Acts I & II and the 85 miuutes of Acts III & IV just flew by. I thouroughly enjoyed the whole performance.
    Well done ROH, chorus, orchestra and performers all. A special word for the beautiful Clemency Burton-Hill whose introductions etc truly set the scene for those of us not able to be there in person-invaluable.
    Special mention to Maestro Pappano who has delivered, yet again, another superb opera.

    I m not sure that filming so much in close up is helpful. For me, it detracts from the emotional experience and I wanted to see the bigger picture more. The overall stage design was confused and occasionally tricksy and close ups of the zara-like bedlinen plus Otello in cosy pyjamas in Act 4 got in the way of the drama. Wonderful singing though soaring over the technicals!

    Superb singing and acting from all on stage. Orchestra and Pappano outstanding. Even liked the 'active' production. Lighting could have been a little brighter as at times tricky to see what was happening on stage. Costumes lovely. Although I felt Mr Kaufmann's jackets were too short. Not very flattering for the posterior! You tend to notice this kind of thing in an up close and personal performance as in a cinema. Not sure about Emilia's hat. Made her look like an extra from Dr Who. Otello's death spoilt by so much blood pouring over the edge of the bed. But other than those few negative comments - excellent.

    No one moved a muscle in the cinema in Cardigan! Amazing singing, Jonas came into his own in second half, the first half belonged to Iago.
    Agresta has a beautiful voice and is well suited to the part.
    Everyone left the cinema feeling emotionally drained. Well done to everybody involved. Love Tony Pappano.

    Really enjoyed last nights live stream. At last a Covent Garden production which can actually be revived. No sinks and bathtubs! Also this was not a Jonas Kaufmann show. ALL singers were of the same high level. Wonderful Chorus and Orchestra. Good job for once.

  46. apotheosis ! my first experience with this live-to-cinema events and it was even before expectations . . . definitely is not going to be the last. specifically this production of otello is outstanding: the cast, the chorus, the orchestra and its conductor, the stage design and the director, all and each of one were at its best. the filming crew did a great job too, at the same level as the production they transmitted to us. i don't know if it is a local objection from here in tel aviv: but the sound, which was perfect, was a little extra loud judging by the reaction of most spectators, not for me although, objectively, i can recognize it was. fascinating kaufmann was at a peak, but it was also absolutely pleasing to get to know his partners in the trio: agresta with unlimited singing sweetness in the dark tragedy and vratogna whose dramatic performance was as challenging for kaufmann as are their own roles

    Like most I found all three principals, orchestra and chorus, excellent. Just one thing, the problems of race and racism that both play and opera raise for a contemporary audience have, quite rightly, been given some consideration in the accompanying videos. It would be equally good to see the issue of domestic violence treated with the same sensitivity. With on average two women a week in England and Wales murdered by their partner or former partner, often on the basis of perceived (or actual) 'infidelity', there is no room for complacency about gender inequality and domestic violence. With domestic abuse projects woefully under-funded, would it not be right for some of the significant revenue that must be generated by this production (future DVD?) donated to Women's Aid, Refuge, and similar charities.

    Óriási várakozással néztünk az előadás elé, különösen Jonas Kaufmann miatt. Az Esultate-ban majdnem sotto voce énekelt, más előadásokban ahogy berobban Otello győztesen, majdnem leszakad a mennyezet. Az I. felvonás csodálatos záró kettőséből teljesen hiányzott az az erotikus töltet, ami a zenében - és más előadásokban - benne volt, hiába mutatta a zárókép az ágyat. Én Agrestának nem tudtam elhinni a szerepet. Vratongának kicsit kevés a hangja Jagóhoz. Az egész színpad állandóan sötét volt, a díszlet érdektelen. Mikor Jago Cassiot provokálja, és "bizonytékot" szolgáltat, Otellot alig lehet látni, tehát nem érthető a jelent. Ha utolsó csókot akar adni Otello a halott Desdemonának, akkor miért mászik fel az ágyra, holott Desdemona felsőteste már a földön van. Otello figurája itt nem nagyszerű, hanem egy jóképű és jó énekes látható csak a színpadon.

    My first Otello which I enjoyed immensely. Iago was brilliantly portrayed and sang by Vratogna and of course, Kaufman and Agresta excelled.

    Stunning performance all round. However, I agree with others about the darkness of the set as seen in the cinema. Did I detect the influence of Caravaggio on the Act 1 up-lighting of faces round the fires? I was also disappointed for those at the ROH in the Amphitheatre and Slips who yet again would be hard-pressed to see Otello in his elevated position eavesdropping on Cassio and Iago. Emilia's hair just right for the period. But, I was enthralled by Kaufmann's acting: not quite so happy about his 'baritone registers' in the part. Big laundry bill. Perhaps the Met let Kaufmann bring the blood left over from their 2013 2nd Act "Parsifal". Vratogna - evil personified. Wish the ROH would make the set of ships Otello used as a toy souvenir to buy - and wish they'd done the same with Senta's 'pond yacht' in the last Dutchman. Emilia's hair - just right for the period. Only downsides - our cinema doesn't do smoked-salmon sandwiches and champagne, and missed the Hamlyn Hall atmosphere.

    This was a truly amazing evening which left me emotionally drained and will live in my memory as being one of the best operas I have seen. Many congrats to the whole cast but especially to Jonas Kaufmann, Maria Agresta and Marco Vratogna and of course Antonio Pappano whose performances were absolutely breathtaking. Please tell me that a recording will be made in due course so that I may relive this incredible evening !!

    An increasingly gripping and moving evening at my local cinema in Rye. Jonas Kaufmann moved me to tears at the end.

    A pity about the audience member who insisted on shouting out over the magical end of Act 1 and at the end of the Ave Maria, destroying the musical mood so carefully established.

    If their appreciation were genuine surely they would have been listening not yelling. Such approbation is worthless.

    According to legend an audience member at a performance of Shakespeare's Othello, yelled out just before the murder, 'Othello, don't kill Desdemona, she is innocent'. I was so involved that I too felt like doing that but didn't as I like being allowed to attend my local cinema. The production was too dark and singers rising from trap doors were ludicrous but these are minor gripes when the singing, acting and orchestral playing were deeply moving. Kaufman was especially wonderful.

    Brilliant! Singers, orchestra, chorus, stage: wonderful! Ok, the lion is superfluous as is the great amount of "blood". But what destroys the illusion of being in the opera house, are the many close ups.
    Anyway, to hear and see otello in cinema was a thrilling experience. I'm so glad I could participate. I hope it will be on DVD soon. Suggestion: Technically it should be possible to put in multi-angled View. Thanks ROH!

    Simply wonderful, thank you ROH. I am lucky enough to have a ticket for the live performance on 10 July and desperately worried in case JK has to cancel!
    Meanwhile, how appalling that ROH is to lose some Arts Council funding when you do so much to bring opera to the widest possible audience. Without excellence, how are others to know what to aspire to?

    • yes - unbeleiveable that the UK's main opera house is to be cut back to save a million or two.

      Hopefully more will join as friends now and that money will make up the difference - maybe roh could get the gvt to agree to no further cuts.

      If Italy had one major opera house do you think they would cut it. They have made cuts but then they have several houses.

      It is not just for the singers - the whole stagecraft professions - lighting etc. need this beacon of excellence admired the world over.
      A ruler once said Mozart should make a few cuts - no one remembers the ruler's name.

    Los cantantes geniales, sobretodo Desdémona que fue absolutamente brillante, no me agrada que ahora siempre las óperas sean tan oscuras, temo a veces por la integridad de los cantantes, sobretodo las trampillas en escenario.

    I watched Otello in a cinema here in London. I couldn't believe how dynamic and deeply moving it was experiencing live opera in a cinema. The artistic play on the set between light and darkness was exactly what was required. The performance was utterly convincing, all singers excelled. The orchestra was magnificent. Kaufman is a find, his ability to carry this extremely challenging part with such meaning and voice will remain with me for years to come. Iago's evil manipulative presence represents a real challenge to our troubled times. *****

    Watched at Curzon Canterbury.
    Audience in cinema mesmerized and spontaneous applause at the end.
    Antonio Pappano is a genius and the lead characters were superb. They have created an Otello apt for our times.
    2 small quibbles. The volume of the chorus in the storm scene must have been phenomenal in the theatre but was strangely muted in the relay given the scale of the production.
    And some of the trap door business was dangerously close to pantomime.
    However, the emotional intensity of the singing and the sublime orchestral playing under Pappano puts the quibbles in the shade.

    So memorable in every way and our thanks and admiration for all involved.

    Like Jemma Wright, my sister and I were desperately disappointed when we arrived at the Empire cinema in Newcastle upon Tyne only to find that it is now a Cineworld cinema and would not be showing Otello, for which I had tried in vain to book seats at ROH as a Friend. The explanaton we were offered did not really explain what the problem was - can you throw any light? Money back was no consolation!!

    Wonderful and moving performances from Jonas and Maria. Jonas Kaufmann is an intelligent singer with a beautiful expressive voice and teamed with Sir Antonio Pappano it is a match made in heaven.
    The staging was far too dark and very formulaic. The costumes were very odd and all that going up and down with the trap door - what an earth did that mean? If one did not know Othello so well one would be hard pressed to know what was going on. Oh for proper lighting and a story well told.

    I attended the cinema screening of Verdi's " Otello " last night and was bemused to see that Jonas Kaufmann was completely white in appearance. Are we all so afraid of being labelled " racist " that we have to make everthing anodyne ? I wasn't expecting him to black up like Sir Laurence Olivier, but with a little help from the make-up department he could have looked Arabic, which, I believe, the Moors truly were. There has to be something different about Otello - something that sets him apart. This is what fuels his insecurity. What we got instead was handsome Jonas Kaufmann. With no difference in Kaufmann's appearance and with sets which provided no atmosphere whatsoever, I felt that I was watching a musically superior concert performance of the opera.

    We saw Otello in our local cinema in Orpington. It was simply wonderful.There were 3 little sound hickups, just a click long but it did not stop my heart being touched. So grateful for this experience

    At the very least, Otello should look dark skinned and not Hamlet wandered in from the National. The production was dull in the extreme with ridiculous costumes dug up from the ROH store. All simply awful and not space enough her to itemise.

    However, musically, it was something else and Pappano seems to have got his act together for this one and banished all the ghastly 'wobblers' which ruin so many of the ROH (and Met) performances these days.

    Agresto sang and acted well but failed to makes us love her. Kauffman sang really well and could well be a splendid Otello in time if his voice holds out. Iago a bit light weight but up to it.

    For heaven's sake kick this production out and bring back the Wakhevitch!

The three leads were superb and it would be invidious to single one out - but Marco with less than 3 weeks to master the role of Iago in this production, was amazing.     I agree with others that the lighting was too dark. It is nice to see all the performers on stage instead of just a few at the front.

    This was a superlative performance, the soloists, chorus, orchestra and production all making the most of this extraordinary piece, and causing me to muse again on the paradox of how such an unrelentingly dark drama could have inspired some of the most powerful , beautiful and inspiring music ever written. My only criticism is that the relay production team should not have played clips from the music before the start of the actual performance. This really spoiled my anticipation of hearing the music that I know and love so well; to be forced to hear snatches of the love duet before the opening choruses was an appalling error of artistic judgement. Silence is part of the best musical experiences.

    Tremendous to have the chance to experience this (in Chesterfield) and thanks to all concerned. Lured my daughter to join me with a pre-screening Nandos, but she sat spellbound throughout. The notion that it is as great a work of art as the play felt very plausible as we left. My one caveat would be that in the cinema it was difficult to appreciate the staging in full and in particular to follow all the framing of scenes, often (always?) under Iago's direction. Equally, I don't think it's reasonable to expect a producer to be particularly concerned about how things will appear to a cinema audience.

    Production: many unsatisfactory moments. Movement at times when the voices should express feelings. Too much falling to the ground in moments of stress. Camera angles bad-I do not need to see whether JK has had his tonsils out or how healthy his tongue is. Otherwise I am sure most women would be happy if he put his shoes under their bed. Blood pouring out brought titters to the audience in Israel at the climax.
    Music: Superb singing from JK but Iago had some slip-ups. Pappano should Have more subtle moments a la Kleiber. Desdemona is a strong character. She is a white woman who has defied convention in marrying a dark skinned moor.This was not expressed. WHERE the action takes place in Shakespeare plays is very important. This production could be anywhere.

    All of this was saved by the SUBLIME Kaufman whose vocal talent & acting was stupendous .The richness of tone & vocal dynamics was superb . A truly carefully considered performance .     I had seen the performance of OTELLO last Saturday at the ROH and judged it, several production miscalculations notwithstanding, one of the most brilliant opera realisations I have seen there over the past fifty five years. Invidious to single out any one element but at my time of life it is the most wonderful gift to have had the privilege of watching the blossoming of Jonas Kaufmann into one of the opera greats.
    Remembering how I got hooked on opera at an early age by the good fortune to witness another great performance - Maria Callas live in Act 2 of TOSCA - I took a young French couple to our local cinema in Nantes and am pleased to report that they were transported by this, their first opera experience. They cannot wait for the next occasion.
    Thank you to all concerned at Covent Garden for two sublime evenings in the theatre and in the cinema.

    Packed house in Curzon Knutsford. One or two little blips in transmission ( common occurance) but not too worrying.
    Wonderful that Herr Kaufmann is now fully back to form after a worrying interlude. I liked the set,although so many close ups made it feel claustrophobic at times. Not so in love with Iago, reminded me of Despicable me ! Felt that JK channeled Domingo in Acts 1 and 2, but boy did he hit the mark in 3 and 4. The end was bloody, but if you puncture the aortic artery, you bleed out! I confess that the thought went through my mind that props would have to put that in soak overnight.
    Very good subtitles, so close to the original Shakespere text.
    A great night out, and within most people's pocket. Bravo ROH . Long may it continue

    The live transmission in the cinema was wonderful. Great experience! Excellent performance! Bravissimo! I have only one complaint for filming. Jonas Kaufmann should be more visible on the screen, although when he does not sing. It is a big mistake to shoot only the singer who is just singing. Jonas has thousands of face expressions showing the subtle changes of his mental mood. Much more interesting than watching Iago and Cassio talking together is watching Otello, his masterful development of his facial expressions and body movements, from curiosity, insecurity, surprise, through rage and anger to deep desperation. Jonas Kaufmann is absolutely unique master in such psychological forms. Therefore he should be filmed even if he is just not singing. I wish these remarkable shots to be used in the DVD production.

    THIS OTHELLO WILL BE ON THE OPERA HISTORY FOREVER. As all of my generation I applaused several times Mario del Monaco, Vickers, Domingo, all of them in different moments where wonderful Otello... But Jonas Kaufmann destroyed every kind of comparative judjement . He reinvented Othello; his voice and his interpretation produced a set of new, complex emotions. The intelligence of his work captured the different nuances of "human fragilitas". The duo Pappano Kaufmann just sublime as the short film of ROH on you tube underlines. The production interesting (not the bed... please), Agresta very good but without the necessary complexity. Cassio good but Jago... not please .. not at all. give me back the possibility of Jonas\Ludovic duo. Thanks to the ROH !!! We are waiting for the DVD as soon as possible

    I am exiled in the US and had been hoping to see this on one of my rare visits back home, but of course all performances are sold out... PLEASE can someone tell me where in or around London I can see an Encore screening of this performance. I know there are some today, but I have overriding family commitments. Surely there must be some cinemas that are showing this in the next couple of weeks or so? I have searched the ROH website (which is is totally dysfunctional if you don't know exactly what you are looking for...), and searched online and checked all the cinemas that I know and are within reach... Surely there must be some showings other than today? I'm only in London for a couple of weeks and was so hoping to catch this... Thanks to anyone who can help!!

      But PLEASE, can you improve your cinema screening listings to make them more user-friendly! At the moment, one inputs a city and gets a map with blobs indicating cinemas. Would it not be easier to have a simple list, by city, of the cinemas screening the performance?

      PS: I loved both the performance and the production, and can't wait for the DVD! (There will be a DVD, won't there?)     Excellent production as usual from ROH. Yes a few slips and personally I found the sets a little disappointing given their hype. Laughably far too much blood in the final scene. But we're all human and overall it made for an inspiring event. No so the technical screening. Cameras panning or players moving across the camers' fiel;ds of view produced jittery pictures in which the detail of the faces was lost and the result was a little nauseous. Not enough bandwidth on the telecast? Or something wrong with the projector? This has not happened on other ROH productions this season at the same theatre and needs fixing. THere was some general discussion on the topic during the interval by a number of viewers, so it spoiled it for many, though not all. Viewed at Barbezieux in France.

    Loved it! Absolutely spellbinding, held my attention throughout and was an emotional wreck at the end. Superb singing and acting from all concerned especially Jonas.
    Audience in Saffron Walden applauded at the end!
    I like the closeups you can see the emotions in Kaufmann's eyes, he is totally in the zone! It is because of his acting ability that I have come to love Opera and not just operatic arias. Please Please do a DVD so I can add to my Kaufmann collection.

    PS a few very short hiccups in sound recording.

    Extremely disappointed! Went to see this at Dundee Odeon, and sat down with my over-priced lemonade, only to find they could not get the satellite link to work, so we were sent home with a refund and apologies. I very much wish I'd seen it, and hope it will be available on DVD.

      There seem to be quite a few incidents of transmission failures. This happened to me too: at an Encore screening of Madama Butterfly at the Tower Theatre in Sacramento, California.
      It was sooooo embarrassing for me because I had taken a new friend along - someone who was 'interested in opera' but had never attended a performance. The sound went just before the wedding night duet, and even though the cinema people fiddled around for half an hour or so, it could not be restored. What a disastrous evening...
      Getting a refund is not enough. Why is this happening so often? Whose fault is it - ROH or the cinema? (NB: Not had this happen at any of the many MET Live screenings I've attended...)
      Also, I find it surprising that the ROH people do not seem to be aware of these transmission failures unless members of the public bring them to their attention.

    I enjoyed the proximity of the action in the cinema as I always do all the acting Ability (apart from fab. singing of ALL the principles
    Kaufmann amazed me after all the Don Joses Cavaradossis, Alfredos etc. the voice has deepened a new Otello was born. Having seen del Monaco, McCracken, Vickers and Domingo it seemed to me completely different in character as well as in human emotions. FABULOUS! I was not totally happy with the production, mostly dark and sparse not quite the feeling of Cyprus but miles above recent Covent Garden disasters
    As for the rest of the cast Vratogna and Agresta were fine .Pappano as usual superb!
    All in all, great evening, Otello is always satisfying (VIVA VERDI) Let's have the DVD now.

    The long awaited cinema relay was very good up to a point. The cast, especially Kaufmann, and conducting were excellent, the production less so. The relay to Cineworld in Newport Isle of Wight had the sound set low level, so that the quieter passages, of which there are many, lost detail and the dynamic range, which is a constituent part of the score, was not present. I find this often the case in this cinema. It also allowed the deep bass from adjacent "blockbusters" to intrude.
    It should be better for such an important event. Could the ROH advise/educate cinemas on this.
    The intros and interviews, apart from Kaufmann and Pappano, were awkward.
    Also it was pointed out that the ROH website did not mention the I.o.W was receiving this broadcast. Not helpful.
    I hope this could be available as an audio release and shown again in the near future, it is sure to be popular.

    I was also hugely disappointed that the showing of Otello at Newbury Vue was cancelled due to satellite problems on Sunday 2nd July. Elderly relative had travelled 40 miles to see it with me. Why does this happen? Got my money back but no compensation for a ruined day. How many cinemas did this affect?

    So thrilled that there are plans for a DVD release next January (a pity it won't be available for Christmas).

    I raved about this production at work and got into a very long, in-depth conversation with a colleague. As part of her masters degree, she based her dissertation on Othello and she expressed her frustrations with the play during our discussion.

    She found it almost impossible to understand how a dignified, intelligent and successful middle-aged man could so quickly believe that his new wife had committed adultery. She found it hard to believe that, after gaining Desdemona's father's favour and negotiating long and hard to gain her hand in marriage (after all, both his age and background would have raised eyebrows), his love for her could have been poisoned so very rapidly.

    I explained to her the interpretation of the scene in which Desdemona explained why she loved Otello so much. This was, I think, pivotal to how this Otello developed during the course of the evening.

    In this scene, Otello was not a leader of men, but became a bashful, embarrassed teenage boy. You could almost imagine this scene being played out between a socially awkward teenage boy and the most popular girl in the school. I am sure that, not only would Otello bashfully avoid Desdemona's gaze, but he would have had his hands deep in his pockets and would have been kicking the toes of his schools shoes into the surface of the school playground.

    The insecurities Otello displayed as a husband and his bashfulness with a woman he loved (and who loved him) really explained how this disintegration and tragedy could have happened with so little effort on Iago's part. My colleague was very, very impressed with this interpretation and, trust me, she really does know her stuff.

    We here in New York saw the HD telecast of OTELLO today July 16 at Kew Gardens. It was a packed house.
    It was absolutely thrilling and Herr Kaufmann is indeed the Otello for today. Along with Ms Agresta and Mr Vratogna, it was a memorable production. The orchestra and chorus were superb. Many thanks to the ROH for b'dcasting this in America.

    We drove 3 hours each way from Tallahassee,Fl to Amelia Island near Jacksonville to the B and B movie theater only to find out the telecast was canceled due to a "computer virus " from another theater. Why wasn't this telecast into Tallahassee which receives Met in HD all year and has a top ten Scool of Music and opera? The cancellation was on Sunday July 16

      In regards to your query about the location of venues, I'm afraid the decision of which US venues our relays are screened in is made by our Stateside distributor rather than the ROH.

    Stateside distributer must know someone in Amelia Island because we have FSU School of Music/ Opera with world class composers and we were snubbed!

    Domingo has always been Otello, as far as I'm concerned, but this afternoon, at Brisbane, Australia, I was blown away by Jonas Kauffmans performance! So believable as he descended into madness. And that voice!!
    I thought the whole cast wonderful, and Pappano's conducting masterful. Thank you R.O.H for bringing us the best Otello I've seen for years!

    Being a huge fan of Jonas Kaufmann I cannot wait to see him on screen as Othello.

    I am sorry to say that I did not like the staging, and Mr. Kaufmann was not powerful to me.
