The singing was sublime and to be able to be inches away from it was very special. Printworks provided such an appropriate setting for the subject; it was just a pity that the thumping music from the nearby fairground could be heard in the background.

  2. Strange, poetic, great, mysterious, rich, leaves an impression long afterwards, unheard unearth subterranean music,
    unreal but ample orchestra,
    violent singers, lights, electronics
mise en scène you can touch,

I am from South Africa, and a (very) intermittent operagoer, put off by the standard repertoire on offer in Cape Town - La Boheme etc etc. I like new and original artistic work. I found Cave exciting, very moving, haunting, thought-provoking. The whole was perfectly performed and made brilliant use of the highly unusual venue. My only criticism : I would have preferred that Drake's otherwise fine script had remained throughout in the poetic-mythic mode he used so effectively, without the overly didactic section in Part 5, "Tree of Shadows". But in sum a wonderful experience that will remain long in my memory.

I liked it very much. The band was strong and there was some amazing singing. A bravura performance from Mark Padmore, but: is it an opera or a song cycle? Re-orchestrating it for the concert hall might give it a longer life than in the opera house. For me, it lacked the dramatic tension between characters which lies at the heart of opera. I think Cave is better suited to the style of a song cycle, which is well-adapted to personal internal drama and would also reach a wider audience.
