Spring Gala

30 May 2018
Main Stage

Join us for a celebratory Gala performance by The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet.

When to see it

Director of The Royal Opera Oliver Mears and Director of The Royal Ballet Kevin O’Hare present a very special programme for this unique Gala performance, celebrating our opera and ballet heritage at the Royal Opera House.

Under the baton of our world-renowned Music Director Antonio Pappano, accompanied by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, international opera stars including Liparit Avetisyan, Hrachuhi Bassenz, Gwyn Hughes Jones, Kristine Opolais and Anita Rachvelishvili perform show-stopping arias by Puccini, Verdi, Dvorák and for one night only, excerpts from Gounod’s Sapho and Meyerbeer’s Dinorah, performed on our main stage for the first time in over a century. Following his success this Season in Les Vêpres siciliennes and Cavalleria rusticana Bryan Hymel joins us, along with Pretty Yende, who returns to the Royal Opera House after her stunning debut in L’elisir d’amore.

The Royal Ballet will showcase the glittering talents of the full Company, joined by some very special guest artists for this exclusively commissioned evening. There is the unique opportunity to see Lauren Cuthbertson and Alexander Jones (Zurich Ballet) in Christian Spuck’s brilliant parody of the ballet genre, Le Grand Pas de Deux. Other highlights include extracts from Petipa’s Le Corsaire, McGregor’s Limen, MacMillan’s Winter Dreams, a preview of The Unknown Soldier by Alastair Marriott, which has its world premiere on our stage this autumn, plus the spectacular finale of Balanchine’s Symphony in C.

All proceeds from the evening will benefit the Royal Opera House Covent Garden Foundation, enabling us to continue presenting extraordinary performances, remarkable craftsmanship and inspiring learning and participation projects.
