Greek-Russian conductor Teodor Currentzis studied violin, piano and composition at the Greek National Conservatory and conducting at the St Petersburg State Conservatory with Ilya Musin. He was conductor of Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre 2004–10 and since 2011 has been Musical Director of Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 2004 he founded the MusicAeterna Ensemble and Chamber Choir. With MusicAeterna at Perm he has conducted operas including The Indian Queen, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, La traviata, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Iolanta, La bohème, Dmitry Kurlyandsky’s Nosferatu and Pascal Dusapin’s Medeamaterial. Other opera engagements include Das Rheingold with MusicAeterna (Ruhrtriennale Festival), Macbeth and Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (Zürich Opera) and Iolanta and Perséphone(Opéra de Lyon). He also directs the Territoria Modern Art Festival.
Currentzis has appeared in concert with MusicAeterna at venues including Vienna Musikverein, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Berlin Philharmonie and Cité de la musique, Paris; at the Lucerne Easter, Helsinki, Aix-en-Provence, Baden-Baden and Bregenz festivals, among others; and on European tour with violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. Currentzis and MusicAeterna are exclusive Sony artists, their recordings including the Mozart/Da Ponte operas and The Rite of Spring. Currentzis’s other recordings include Shostakovich’s piano concertos with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Alexander Melnikov on Harmonia Mundi. His many awards include Russia’s Golden Mask theatrical award over several years.
