Biography

Slovak tenor Štefan Margita made his Royal Opera debut in 2004 as Zinovy Ismailov (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk). He returns in the 2017/18 Season to sing Luka Kuzmic (From the House of the Dead).

Margita grew up in Košice and studied at the conservatory there. He worked at the Košice State Theatre O983–6 and was a member of Prague National Theatre 1986–91, Vienna Volksoper 1987–91 and Prague State Opera 1992–4. He has performed for opera companies including the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Dutch National Opera, Paris Opéra, Bavarian State Opera, Berlin State Opera and Teatro Regio, Turin. His many roles at Prague’s National Theatre include Luka Kuzmic and Laca Klemen (Jenůfa). His other repertory includes Loge (Das Rheingold), Drum Major (Wozzeck), Valzacchi (Der Rosenkavalier), Prince Shuisky (Boris Godunov), Tichon Kabanov (Kát’a Kabanová) and Captain Vere (Billy Budd).

Margita has worked with conductors including Claudio Abbado, Jirí Belohlávek, Semyon Bychkov, Hartmut Haenchen, Charles Mackerras and Antonio Pappano, and has performed at the Salzburg, Bregenz and Edinburgh festivals, among others. His concert repertory includes works by Mozart, Beethoven, Dvorák and Bartók. His recordings include opera and operetta arias, East European and gypsy songs and music theatre songs.
