Screenwriter/librettist Samantha Newton makes her Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 Season as co-librettist with Rachel C. Zisser on Na’ama Zisser’s opera Mamzer Bastard.
Newton grew up in the north west of England and started her career in design for performance, graduating from Central Saint Martins, London. She met Rachel C. Zisser when they were both film directing fellows at the American Film Institute Conservatory, Los Angeles. Their creative partnership began with the award-winning film Traces, directed by Rachel C. Zisser, co-written by Newton, which had its premiere in competition at the Berlinale. Newton previously collaborated with Na'ama Zisser on the short horror opera Black Sand (Tête à Tête and Grimeborn) and also on the National Opera Studio project 12:40 for singer Andrew Henley.
Newton’s television series The Kindling, created with partner Rachel C. Zisser, is currently in development with Christina Wayne (Mad Men, Breaking Bad) at Assembly Entertainment and ITV Studios America. Newton's first fiction feature film writing credit Damascus Cover, released in June 2018, stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers and John Hurt.
