Bulgarian mezzo-soprano Nadia Krasteva makes her Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 Season as Maddalena (Rigoletto).
Krasteva was born in Sofia. She studied at the Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music in Sofia, in Vienna and with Anita Cerquetti in Rome. She made her professional debut as Sally Bowles (Cabaret) for the Stefan Makedonski National Music Theatre, Sofia, and her professional operatic debut as Carmen at the National Palace of Culture, Sofia. She was a member of Vienna State Opera 2002–12. She has sung the major Verdi mezzo-soprano roles, such as Maddalena, Azucena (Il trovatore), Eboli (Don Carlos), Preziosilla (La forza del destino), Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera) and Amneris (Aida), for companies including Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Semperoper Dresden, Berlin State Opera, La Scala, Milan, Paris Opéra, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Dallas Opera and San Francisco Opera.
Krasteva’s other repertory, which she has performed for leading opera houses, includes Adalgisa (Norma), Dalila (Samson et Dalila), Giulietta (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), the Princess de Bouillon (Adriana Lecouvreur), Olga (Eugene Onegin) and the Foreign Princess (Rusalka). She has performed the role of Carmen for companies including Vienna State Opera, Dutch National Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Latvian National Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and Arena di Verona. Her discography includes a collection of Tchaikovsky songs.
