Scottish violinist Melissa Carstairs is Assistant Concert Master with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. She was appointed to the position in 2004.
Carstairs was born in Glasgow and began playing the violin aged seven. She made her professional concerto debut at 15. She studied with Lydia Mordkovitch and at the Juilliard School with Sally Thomas. Since graduating she has appeared as guest leader with numerous orchestras, including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra. In 2003 she led the Edinburgh String Quartet on a tour of Scotland.
Carstairs has led the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House for much of The Royal Ballet’s repertory, and at the Orchestra’s final concert of the 2006 Tuscan Sun Festival in Cortona under Antonio Pappano.
