Madeleine Boyd

Biography

British designer Madeleine Boyd made her Royal Opera debut in the 2014/15 Season designing Glare in the Linbury Studio Theatre. In the 2017/18 Season she designs Na’ama Zisser’s new opera Mamzer Bastard at the Hackney Empire.

Boyd studied Theatre Design at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. Her opera designs include set and costume designs for Powder Her Face (Royal Danish Opera, Arets Reumert Prize 2016 for Best Opera Production), Albert Herring (Maggio Musicale, Florence), Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux (Welsh National Opera, the last also opened Teatro Real, Madrid’s 2015/16 Season), Meyerbeer’s Margherita d’Anjou (Martina Franca Festival), La traviata and Don Giovanni (Opera North), Fidelio (Coburg, Longborough Festival), La Cenerentola (Teatro Regio, Turin) and Nabucco (Würzburg), set designs for Semiramide (Opéra national de Lorraine), Oresteia (Bard Summerscape) and Porpora’s Mitridate (Heidelberg), and costume designs for Andrea Chénier, Argento’s The Voyage of Edgar Allan Poe and Rigoletto (Braunschweig). She works regularly with directors Orpha Phelan and Alessandro Talevi.

Boyd’s theatre and dance credits include Schnitzler’s Liebelei (Vorarlberger Landestheater, Bregenz) and L’Histoire du Soldat (Maggio Musicale, Florence. She was awarded the 2008 Design Fellowship from Independent Opera.
