Leah Hausman

Movement director

Biography

American choreographer Leah Hausman made her Royal Opera debut in 2001 on Rigoletto, directed by David McVicar, and has since returned to work on Die Zauberflöte, Le nozze di Figaro, Aida and Les Troyens, directed by McVicar; Elektra, directed by Charles Edwards; and Il turco in Italia, directed by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier. She regularly directs revivals for The Royal Opera. In the 2019/20 Season she is Associate Director for Death in Venice.

Hausman trained in dance and drama in New York City and at the École Jacques Lecoq in Paris. With Terry Gilliam she has co-directed and choreographed Benvenuto Cellini for English National Opera, Dutch National Opera, Liceu, Barcelona, Rome Opera and Paris Opéra, and The Damnation of Faust for ENO, Opera Vlaanderen, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, and Berlin State Opera. Movement credits include The Rake’s Progress for Aix-en-Provence Festival and Dutch National Opera, L’elisir d’amore, Gianni Schicchi and La bohème for Glyndebourne, Madama Butterfly and Pelléas et Mélisande for Scottish Opera, La clemenza di Tito (also Copenhagen, Bremen and Aix-en-Provence) for ENO, Falstaff (also Beijing) and Les Troyens (also La Scala, San Francisco) for Vienna State Opera and Giovanna d’Arco for La Scala, Milan. She has worked extensively in the USA, credits including Norma, Tosca, Roberto Devereux, Maria Stuarda and Il trovatore (the last also Chicago and San Francisco) for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Billy Budd and Rusalka (also San Francisco) for Lyric Opera of Chicago and Don Giovanni (also Scottish Opera, La Monnaie, Brussels) and Lohengrin (also Geneva) for San Francisco Opera and Houston Grand Opera.

Also active in theatre, Hausman has worked for companies including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Complicite, National Theatre, Old Vic and Chichester Festival, among others. She has co-directed several plays with Neil Bartlett for the Royal Court and elsewhere.
