Biography

Director Jay Scheib makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 Season directing Na’ama Zisser’s new opera Mamzer Bastard at the Hackney Empire.

Scheib was born in Iowa and attended the University of Minnesota and Columbia University School of the Arts. He went on to co-found The American Theater Institute. He has directed theatre and opera throughout Europe, and in the US, Canada, the UK, China and Hong Kong, and is known for his integration of new technologies in live performance. His opera productions include Powder Her Face (New York City Opera, Opéra de Québec), Fidelio (Saarbrücken), Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria and Nono’s No hay caminos, hay que caminar (Darmstadt), Kouroupou’s Pylades and Jocasta (Athens Epidaurus Festival), the mash-up Surrogate Cities/Götterdämmerung (Wuppertal) and the world premiere of Keeril Makan’s Persona (Los Angeles Opera). Key theatre and dance productions include the multi-platform Platonov, or the Disinherited (Without Walls Festival and The Kitchen, New York City), Seven Sages (Hong Kong Dance Company), Fassbinder’s play Garbage, the City and Death (Norwegian Theater Academy), his own adaptation of Fassbinder’s World of Wires (The Kitchen, KRT Festival, Krákow, Festival d’Automne, Paris, among others), Bellona, Destroyer of Cities (Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MAC Exit Festival, Paris, The Kitchen) and Bat Out of Hell (London Coliseum/English National Opera).

Scheib was named Best New York Theater Director by Time Out New York (2009), and one of 25 artists shaping the next 25 years of American theatre by American Theater Magazine. His many awards include an OBIE Award for Best Direction and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He is Professor of Music and Theater Arts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
