German mezzo-soprano Gundula Hintz makes her Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 Season as Esther in Na’ama Zisser’s new opera Mamzer Bastard.
Hintz studied at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin and attended masterclasses with Aribert Reimann and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. She began her career as a dramatic soprano, singing roles including Amelia (Un ballo in maschera) and Sieglinde (Die Walküre), and contemporary roles including Countess Laura (Roland Moser’s Avatar) in St Gallen and Baroness Liddy (Detlev Glanert’s Scherz, Satire, Ironie und tiefere Bedeutung) for Halle Opera. She made her mezzo-soprano debut in 2011 as Fricka (Der Ring des Nibelungen) for Darmstadt State Theatre. She has subsequently sung Fricka in Halle, Ludwigshafen and Leipzig. Other appearances include Herodias (Salome) and Frugola (Il tabarro) in Darmstadt, Adelaide (Arabella) in Halle and for the Canadian Opera Company, Fraulein Schneider (Cabaret) for Augsburg Theatre, Dämonia (Humperdinck’s Dornröschen) in Leipzig and Second Norn and Waltraute (Götterdämmerung) in Halle.
Hintz has appeared widely in concert, including Mahler’s Symphony no.8 at the Berlin Philharmonie, and sung at the Festival Radio France in Montpellier, the Venice Biennale and the Berliner Festwochen.
