French-American countertenor Collin Shay makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 Season as Yoel in Na’ama Zisser’s new opera Mamzer Bastard.
Shay studied at McGill University in Montréal, Canada. He went on to further studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he is currently a Junior Fellow in the Historical Performance Department. Operatic roles include the title role of Cavalli’s Giasone, Ottone (Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea), Oberon (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Silvio (Handel’s Il pastor fido), Tolomeo (Handel’s Giulio Cesare) and Goffredo (Handel’s Rinaldo).
Shay’s concert appearances at Wigmore Hall include works by Cheryl Frances-Hoad with The Prince Consort, and a world premiere piece for countertenor and shruti box by James Ratcliffe, To Wake Up A Man. He has recorded works by Frances-Hoad for Champs Hill Records, and works by Tunder and Buxtehude for the Veterum Musica label.
