Polish tenor Arnold Rutkowski makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2019/20 Season as Don José (Carmen).
Rutkowski was born in Lódz, where he studied at the Music Academy. He went on to perform leading roles for opera companies in Warsaw and Wroclaw between 2006 and 2008. He made his Italian debut at the Teatro Comunale Modena as Don José in 2009 and his German debut in Wiesbaden in 2010. He has since sung for companies including Hamburg State Opera, Stuttgart State Opera, Berlin State Opera, Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Paris Opéra, Opéra de Lyon, Royal Swedish Opera, Norwegian National Opera, Polish National Opera, Finnish National Opera, Bolshoi Theatre, Mariinsky Theatre, Vilnius City Opera, Greek National Opera and Opera Australia. Along with Don José, his repertory includes Pollione (Norma), Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto), Alfredo Germont (La traviata), Riccardo (Un ballo in maschera), Rodolfo (La bohème), Mario Cavaradossi (Tosca), B.F. Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Lensky (Eugene Onegin), Vaudemont (Iolanta), Stefan (The Haunted Manor) and Shepherd (Król Roger).
In 2009 Rutkowski won the Jan Kiepura Vocal Competition and the CulturArte Prize – Bertita and Guillermo Martinez – in Operalia. He has performed in concert at the Bad Kissingen Festival and as Pinkerton at Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
