British designer Anthony Ward made his Royal Ballet debut in 1999 on Michael Corder’s Masquerade and has since worked on Frederick Ashton’s Les Rendezvous (2000 production) and Corder’s Dance Variations for the Company. He made his Royal Opera debut in 2002 on Macbeth, directed by Phyllida Lloyd. Previous work at the Royal Opera House include Gloriana for Opera North.
Ward studied theatre design at Wimbledon School of Art. His opera designs include Alcina and Hänsel und Gretel (Vienna State Opera), Manon Lescaut (Paris Opéra), Die Zauberflöte (Glyndebourne), Carousel, Peter Grimes and La bohème (Opera North), The Carmelites (English National Opera and Welsh National Opera), The Makropulos Affair (Metropolitan Opera, New York) and Tosca (Antwerp, Hamburg and Zürich). His dance credits include Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker! (Sadler’s Wells and UK tour). In theatre, he has designed many productions for the National Theatre, including The Red Lion, King Lear, Twelfth Night, The Invention of Love, Othello, John Gabriel Borkman and Sweet Bird of Youth; and for the Royal Shakespeare Company, including The Tempest and Troilus and Cressida. Other theatre and music theatre credits include Gypsy, Sweeney Todd and Private Lives (Chichester and West End), Oliver! (West End), A Doll’s House (Donmar Warehouse), Mary Stuart (West End, Broadway and Donmar), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (London Palladium) and Oklahoma! (West End, Broadway).
His awards include two Olivier Awards (1996 and 1999) and a Tony Award (2009). He was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the University of the Arts, London, in 2014.
