English tenor Andrew Tortise made his Royal Opera debut in 2011 in MacMillan’s Clemency in the Linbury Studio Theatre. He has since returned to sing Spirit of the Masque (Gloriana), Yurodivy (Boris Godunov), Kunz Vogelgesang (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) and Normanno (Lucia di Lammermoor) for The Royal Opera and Eurymachus (The Return of Ulysses) for The Royal Opera at the Roundhouse. In the 2018/19 Season he sings Vána Kudrjáš (Katya Kabanova) for The Royal Opera.
Tortise was a Choral Scholar at Wells Cathedral and Trinity College, Cambridge. Operatic engagements include David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) and Ferrando (Così fan tutte) for Welsh National Opera, the St Matthew Passion (staged) and Lucano (L’incoronazione di Poppea) for Glyndebourne Festival, Marzio (Mitridate, re di Ponto) for Salzburg Festival, Peter Quint (The Turn of the Screw) and Ferrando for Opéra de Lyon, Lurcanio (Ariodante), Novice (Billy Budd) and Janek (The Makropulos Affair) for Dutch National Opera, Melchior (Frühlings Erwachen) for La Monnaie, Brussels, and Robert (Skin Deep) for Opera North and Bregenz Festival.
Tortise has toured worldwide in concert with period instrument ensembles, including Academy of Ancient Music, Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Gabrieli Consort, Combattimento Consort and Le Concert Spirituel, and with orchestras including London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and Rotterdam Philharmonic. His concert repertory includes Monteverdi’s Vespers, Bach’s Passions and Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings and Les Illuminations.
