Scottish tenor Alasdair Elliott made his Royal Opera House debut in July 1990 singing Ruodi (Guillaume Tell). He has since returned regularly to perform with The Royal Opera, in roles including Bardolph (Falstaff), Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), Pong and Emperor Altoum (Turandot), Andres (Wozzeck), Kunz Vogelgesang (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Don Curzio (Le nozze di Figaro), Innkeeper (Der Rosenkavalier), Balthasar Zorn (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), First Priest (Die Zauberflöte) and with the ensemble in The Nose. In the 2018/19 Season he sings Squeak (Billy Budd) and Don Curzio (Le nozze di Figaro).
Elliott studied at the then Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Britten Pears School with Peter Pears and the National Opera Studio. He has sung with companies around the world, including Dutch National Opera, Teatro Real Madrid, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Israeli Opera, La Monnaie, Brussels, the Metropolitan Opera House, New York and at the Glyndebourne Festival. His repertory also includes Goro (Madama Butterfly), Red Whiskers (Billy Budd), Valzacchi (Der Rosenkavalier) and First and Fourth Jew (Salome). Elliott also sings widely in contemporary music, performing in the world premieres of Legende at the Concertgebouw and Buller’s The Bacchae for ENO, and creating Shvonder (A Dog’s Heart) and Mr Strutt (Marnie) for ENO. Other highlights include Vova (Schnittke’s Life with an Idiot) and the Scribe and the Chancellor (Schreker’s Der Schatzgräber).
Elliott’s recording of Bardolph with the London Symphony Orchestra under Colin Davis won a Grammy in 2005. Further recordings include Fourth Jew (Salome) for Chandos, Red Whiskers for Virgin Classics, Gamekeeper (Rusalka) for the Glyndebourne Live Label and Kunz Vogelgesang for the Royal Opera Heritage Series under Bernard Haitink.
