The Royal Opera has announced the latest musicians to join its professional development programme, the Jette Parker Young Artists.

Five new singers will join the Company in September 2018. They were chosen from more than 440 applicants from 59 countries and will join six others who continue on the Programme into their second year next Season. They are:

  • Chilean soprano Yaritza Véliz
  • Chinese mezzo-soprano Hongni Wu
  • American countertenor Patrick Terry
  • Argentinean baritone German E. Alcántara
  • Scottish-Iranian bass-baritone Michael Mofidian

In addition, four new music staff will also join the programme at the same time:

  • Hong Kong-born British conductor Jonathan Lo
  • British conductor/répétiteur Patrick Milne
  • British conductor Thomas Payne
  • British conductor/répétiteur Edmund Whitehead

The Jette Parker Young Artist programme is designed to support the artistic development of talented singers at the beginning of their career. Young Artists are employed as salaried members of The Royal Opera over a two-year period, during which time they are immersed in the life of the Royal Opera House to help them form their own artistic identity and give them guidance on their trajectory through the business.

The performers participate in a specially-tailored programme, which includes extensive daily coaching in languages, stagecraft and vocal techniques, alongside preparing cover roles, and performing concerts and smaller roles on the main stage.

The Jette Parker Young Artists Programme is generously supported by Oak Foundation.

Perhaps it would be better to illustrate this article with a photograph showing the singers chosen, rather than one showing other singers?

      Hi Geoff,

With the singers not having yet joined the Company, we don't yet have a group shot of them, and so used an image reflecting the programme, rather than the specific individuals concerned.

Each new singer will have an artist page in due course, where you'll be able to find out more about them.

      Best wishes,

      Chris

I am thrilled beyond words for Hongni Wu who will graduate from Manhattan School of Music this May. What a wonderful step for her at this crucial time in her career. I will miss having her in my Studio but champion this wonderful opportunity.
